Abdoela Berhan lived at the local taxpayer-funded Britannia migrant hotel and told police that he acted in self-defence.

Speaking through a Tigrinyan interpreter during his trial, Berhan told Southampton Magistrates’ Court that Cleo had tried to intimidate him.

Berhan failed to turn up for court but was found guilty of the assault in his absence – just one week after he was also convicted of kicking and spitting at a worker in Subway. Later that day, he returned to the Subway to pick up food orders for his Just Eat delivery job.

He was also found guilty of criminal damage to a police cell following a trial. It is unknown if he will be deported following the completion of his sentence.
