Metropolitan Police confirmed this evening, Sunday 23 August, that a 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He was detained by Kent Police while travelling to France and remains in custody.

The investigation relates to the fire at a property on Berkeley Avenue, Hounslow, shortly after 1am on Wednesday 19 August. A 48-year-old woman died in hospital, while a 40-year-old woman remains in a life-threatening condition. Seven other people who were injured have now been discharged.

This was already being investigated as a suspected murder, but today’s arrest — particularly while the suspect was travelling out of Britain — is the first major breakthrough publicly announced by detectives.

Police say they are still pursuing several lines of inquiry, so the circumstances and motive remain unconfirmed.
